How/why is it advantageous for a plant that the stamins and pistils mature at different times?

This is all tied in with plant pollination and flower plants and stuff... thanks...

How/why is it advantageous for a plant that the stamins and pistils mature at different times?
It reduces the possibility for self-pollination.

Genetic diversity leads to increased fitness. Diversity is required for evolution to occur.
Reply:Prevents self-pollination and encourages out-crossing which leads to greater genetic diversity within the population.
Reply:Encourages cross pollination, reshuffle the DNA.
